Black dog

It has been interesting going through the studio just looking through old work, throwing some away, putting some in a pile to paint over /strip for re-stretching .
These paintings are from a series I did after university, at the time I was suffering from depression and I was concerned that the ‘black dog’ was going to be with me for a long time. I have been lucky, the dog has visited but never hung around too long since that time… But seeing these works again can bring all those feelings back again. They will never be on the ‘to be thrown away pile’, but they will never be on the ‘lets hang them on the wall’ pile either.

The sun has been shining and I have felt the urge to tidy the studio. I have been painting and making for a very long time, so I have an awful lot of stuff that is collecting dust…. Paper experiments and old frames just doing nothing but clutter the place up. So I tried using the scraps of paper and had fun doing more wolf portraits … The frames were around so that was useful … Everything looks better framed but I rarely do it.
Then I went for a walk and saw two really rustic looking frames in a junk shop, just what I need, more frames! They are a bit tatty but they just cried out for more wolfy portraits, so I have spent an enjoyable few days with my puppets… Every time I paint them they make me smile .
